Living with a new language

My first time living anywhere other than Canada, I chose to live somewhere I would have to speak Spanish on a day to day basis. I came to Peru with very basic knowledge of the language, and now 4 months later, I have a greater understanding but still struggle daily. I’ve been in classes at a language institute for two months now, currently debating on wether or not I will attend a third. It has been nothing but helpful to attend these classes and learn the language in a real learning environment. Phone apps and audio books can really only get you so far.

My only regret is that I wish I had started the classes as soon as I arrived here instead of two months after my arrival. It would have made integrating a lot easier and would have set me on a routine from the beginning. However, I did need a break from reality when I first arrived. My suggestion to anyone planning to spend a long period of time somewhere with a new or different language is to always make your best effort to speak the language with the locals, because most of the time they will see right away that you’re not fluent and will help you along with what you’re trying to communicate with them.

  1. I am now not certain the place you are getting your info, however great topic. I needs to spend some time studying much more or understanding more. Thank you for great information I used to be on the lookout for this information for my mission.
